Mount Marty College Policy

 Student Laptop Program

Policy Statement
Mount Marty College will provide Yankton campus full-time undergraduate students with a laptop computer and 24-hour access to the College's wireless fiber-optic network.  The laptop is protected by the manufacturer's warranty and is not insured for theft or damage resulting from abuse. 

Rationale for Policy
Laptops are provided to full-time undergraduate students so they will have access to relevant technology for classwork, projects, and presentations.  Mount Marty College believes that access to technology is an essential component of education that addresses preparation of students for a contemporary world of work. 

Scope of Policy
This policy applies to full-time undergraduate students enrolled on the Yankton campus.  A full-time undergraduate student is defined as one who carries a minimum of 12 credits.   Yankton Campus is 1105 West Eighth Street, Yankton, SD.  

Exclusions:
Graduate students are not eligible for this program.

Part-time degree and non-degree seeking students are not eligible for this program

Watertown students are not eligible for this program

Procedures:

Program for New Yankton Campus First-Time Full-Time Students

The laptop program will support two options:

Standard Option: New Windows-Based Laptop
Eligible students will receive a new Windows-based laptop computer upon registration and payment of tuition and fees. This computer will come with a standard one year parts and labor warranty from the manufacturer.  

Upgrade Option: Apple MacBook
Eligible students will have the option of upgrading to an Apple MacBook for an additional one-time upgrade charge equal to the cost difference between the Standard Windows Option and the MacBook.   The upgrade charge must be paid in full before the MacBook order can be processed.  This laptop will come with a standard one year parts and labor warranty from the manufacturer.

Assessed Charge for Departing MMC Early:
Students receiving a laptop as incoming freshmen will be required to maintain full time status through census date of his/her third semester at Mount Marty College. If full time status is not maintained, the laptop must be returned to Mount Marty College in working order or a charge equal to the original purchase price of the Standard Option computer will be placed on the student's account.

Software Provided:
Eligible students attending Mount Marty College will be provided Microsoft Office Software as well as Anti-Virus Protection Software under the campus licensing agreements.  The licensing agreements for this software are only valid for enrolled students and does not cover the software after graduation or departure from Mount Marty College,

Repair of Laptop Hardware:
Warranty service is available for laptop computers offered by Mount Marty College. The Information Technology Help Desk is authorized to provide warranty service.   Students may also access warranty service through other vendor specific authorized service centers.   If damage to the laptop is not covered as part of the one year parts and labor warranty or if the warranty period has expired, the Mount Marty College Information Technology Help Desk will provide an estimate of the repair costs and offer to complete the repair on a fee for service agreement.    

Transfer Students:
Transfer Students who enrolls with fewer than 75 credit hours and meet the criteria for full-time student status are eligible for the program.  A student enrolling for the spring semester will receive a laptop purchased for the prior fall that has been turned in; however, if a returned laptop is not available, the college will purchase a new laptop.  Students receiving a laptop as  transfer students will be required to maintain full time status through census date of his/her third semester at Mount Marty College. If full time status is not maintained, the laptop must be returned to Mount Marty College in working order or a charge equal to the original purchase price of the Standard Option computer will be placed on the student's account.

First Time Full-Time Undergraduate Freshman Entering MMC in the spring:
A First Time Full Time Undergraduate Freshman enrolling for the spring semester will be provided a new laptop. The student will be subject to the assessed fee requirements of the program stated above.   Students receiving a laptop as incoming freshmen will be required to maintain full time status through census date of his/her third semester at Mount Marty College. If full time status is not maintained, the laptop must be returned to Mount Marty College in working order or a charge equal to the original purchase price of the Standard Option computer will be placed on the student's account

Dispute of Charges:
Any disputes regarding charges for damages will be resolved by an appeal process facilitated by a subcommittee of the Information Technology Advisory Council.  Copies of the dispute resolution process may be obtained from the Chief Information Officer.

Program Review and Revisions
This program will be reviewed at least annually and changes to the program could be implemented at any time.

Implementation Process for New Students:
New First Time Full Time Students will be required to make a laptop selection by July 1st. for a fall semester start date, or December 1st for spring semester start date. If no selection is made by July 1st or December 1st, no  laptop will be ordered for the student until such time as a machine selection is made.  Eligible students admitted after July 1 will be asked to make their selection as soon as they register.  Laptop delivery for students making selections after July 1 cannot be guaranteed to coincide with the beginning of the fall semester.    Eligible students choosing the Apple MacBook option will be required to pay a non-refundable upgrade charge equal to the cost difference between the Standard Windows Computer and the MacBook Upgrade Option.  Payment of the upgrade option charge is due at by July 1st or December 1st in order for the Apple MacBook to be available by the start of the semester.   Selection of the Apple MacBook will require the upgrade charge to be paid prior to the laptop being ordered for the student.   For a student who does not meet these deadlines or registers after these deadlines every effort will be made to get his/her laptop as close to the start of the term as possible but delivery and set up is not guaranteed.

Program for Existing Full-Time Undergraduate Yankton Campus Students 

Fall 2013 Only

The laptop program will support two options for existing eligible students returning for study in Fall 2013.  Specific aspects of the program for returning students are as follows.

  1.  Eligibility:  Currently enrolled full-time undergraduate students on the Yankton campus who are returning for continued study the Fall 2013 semester.  To be eligible for the new program, students must have been issued a laptop under the existing program. 
  2. Eligible students will be provided the Standard Windows Option at no additional costs or upgrade to the MacBook option by paying the upgrade charge as detailed above. 
  3. Software and warranty repair will be provided as detailed above.
  4. Eligible returning students in Fall 2013 will be required to maintain full time status through the census date of the Fall 2014 semester or maintain full time status and successfully complete her/his degree requirements for graduation from Mount Marty College before that time. If full time status is not maintained or degree requirements not fulfilled prior to Fall 2014 census date, the laptop must be returned to Mount Marty College in working order.  In such instances, failure to return the laptop will result in placement of a charge equal to the original purchase price of the Standard Option computer on the student's account.   
  5. Eligible returning students will be required to make a laptop selection and be registered full time for classes by July 1st. for the Fall 2013 semester start date. If no selection has been made or the student is not registered full time no machine will be ordered for the student until such time as a machine selection is made and full time registration status is confirmed.   Eligible returning students choosing the Apple MacBook option will be required to pay a non-refundable upgrade charge equal to the cost difference between the Standard Windows Computer and the MacBook Upgrade Option.  Payment of the upgrade option charge is due by July 1st or December 1st in order for the Apple MacBook to be available by the start of the semester.  Selection of the Apple MacBook will require the upgrade charge to be paid prior to the laptop being ordered for the student.   For a student who does not meet these deadlines or registers after these deadlines every effort will be made to get his/her laptop as close to the start of the term as possible but delivery and set up is not guaranteed.
