Mount Marty Signs Byrd as Two Sport Athlete

Mount Marty College is pleased to announce the athletic signing of Tess Byrd of Kadoka, SD to play basketball and participate in cross country for the Lancers.

Byrd is a 5'7" point/shooting guard, who averaged 10 points, 3 rebounds, 6 assists, and 4 steals per game and had a free throw percentage of 80%. For her efforts on the court, Byrd was awarded All-Conference, State B All-Tournament team 2011, Southern Plains All-Tournament Team, and named to the Senior All-Star game. Her team placed 6th at the 2011 State B Tournament and was 2011 District 13B and Region 7B Champions.

Tom Schlimgen, head Mount Marty women's basketball coach, is excited to welcome Byrd to the team. "Tess is a great person and will be a great addition to the program."

In addition to her skills as a basketball player, Byrd has also signed with the MMC cross country program. Last year she participated in 3200m relay, 1600m medley relay, and 800m relay. Her personal best was 15:45 at the region meet where she placed 16th. Her team was the Region Champions and took second at the state meet. Byrd earned the title of Best of the West Honorable Mention.

MMC head cross country coach, Randy Fischer, sees a great addition in Byrd. "Tess is a great athlete and we are excited to have her as part of our cross country team for next year!"

Byrd, daughter of Harvey and Karen Byrd, plans to major in parks and recreation management at Mount Marty College. In addition to her basketball and cross country awards she has also the recipient of one of MMC's prestigious academic scholarships, the Benedictine Scholarship.
