Mount Marty College to Hold Commencement May 10

Mount Marty College will host spring 2013 commencement exercises at 2:00 PM Saturday, May 10 at Laddie E. Cimpl Arena, 1105 W. 8th St., Yankton. Baccalaureate will be held prior to commencement at 10:30 AM on Saturday, May 10 in the Bishop Marty Memorial Chapel.

Current Mount Marty College board member, Kathryn Higgins, will give this year's commencement address. Kathryn O'Leary Higgins is the President of the Higgins Company, a Washington, D.C. government relations firm. Prior to forming her own company, she was sworn in as the 36th Member of the National Transportation Safety Board on January 3, 2006. Ms. Higgins came to Washington from Yankton, South Dakota. She graduated from Mount Marty High School in 1965 and attended Mount Marty College for two years before transferring to the University of Nebraska where she earned a bachelor of science degree.

She has more than three decades of experience in the public and private sectors. In addition to her work with the NTSB, she served as Deputy Secretary of the U.S. Department of Labor and Chief of Staff to the Secretary of Labor, Vice Chair of the Presidential Commission on U.S. Coast Guard Roles and Missions and Vice President for Public Policy with the National Trust for Historic Preservation. She served on both the Carter and Clinton White House staffs, first as Deputy Assistant to the President for Domestic Policy and then as Assistant to the President and Secretary to the Cabinet, working closely with the NTSB, DOT, FAA, and Coast Guard on transportation issues. Ms. Higgins also worked in Congress as Chief of Staff to Congressman Sander Levin, and Senior Legislative Associate and Minority Staff Director for Senator Edward Kennedy with the U.S. Senate Labor and Human Resources Committee.
